The topic of this post is an apt description of the thoughts that have given me pause in recent times. In line with the other services you mentioned(Netflix, Itunes, cell phones novels etc.) is the expected proliferation of portable devices such as the Kindle which will make receiving and experiencing - because how many people really want to read Grisham's Playing For Pizza on a tiny screen - free/low-priced content much easier, especially when combined with the blossoming of self-publishing.

I agree and wholly support the concept of library as 'information commons' -- providing space and facilitation for people to gather, play, and learn (hopefully at the same time). This is really the only direction that is appropriate in terms of the collective library mission and sustainable with regard to the shrinking costs and expanding avenues of creating, possessing and distributing content. Increasingly, the content will become the actuality of the library events(the concept as spoken in real-time(including, for example, the lilt of a speaker's voice) as well as the recording of the talk(I'm thinking something like: http://fora.tv/partner/Los_Angeles_Public_Library), and the remixing that follows, if we copyleft the materials).

One reservation I have when envisioning this future is what will happen with the specialized physical and digital collections that libraries have. To me, one of the core tenets of public libraries - in conjunction with archives and museums - should be to preserve the cultural heritage of the community served. With funds and staff time devoted primarily to creating real-time programming(and the other services described in the article by Phil Shapiro you linked to a while back), a challenge will be to strike a balance between specialized(I include some, particularly historic, databases in this designation), but relatively seldom-used resources and more popular immediate pursuits. It'll be interesting to see and participate in how things play out.

Thanks very much for your post, which as you can see, inspired me to clarify these important issues in my own mind. :O)

I agree we must always be looking for the best way to get customers materials and that libraries should have a greater social role in society but in the large urban library systems of NYC we are dealing with hundreds of thousands of customers who don't even own a computer. They depend on us for what some may consider old technology. We're serving the best we can afford and the most basic technology needs of our millions of customers. That's a challenge and as long as the huge demand exists for the basics budget cuts are going to severly hamper leaps into ideal library services of the future. But we need to keep aware and thinking about new possibilities, watching how they work out and making our own plans.
My point is really that for so many people in urban America just giving them a chance to have free e-mail is a major service.
